Role of the Town Treasurer

The Town Treasurer is an elected official, serving a one-year term that expires at Town Meeting Day each year. If a vacancy occurs due to resignation or other circumstances, the Select Board may appoint someone to complete the term or call a Special Town Meeting to fill the position.

The Treasurer also serves as Town Tax Collector, an appointed position responsible for receiving and processing municipal tax payments. Residents may pay their property taxes:

  • In person during Treasurer’s office hours
  • By mail (postmarks accepted)
  • Via mortgage escrow if applicable

The Town Office is open for tax payments Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (except holidays).

On the second and fourth Tuesdays, the office remains open until 6:00 PM (Select Board meeting days).

Treasurer’s office hours specifically are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, unless otherwise posted.

Official Responsibilities

From the Vermont League of Cities & Towns Municipal Treasurer’s Handbook:

The town treasurer plays a vital role in Vermont municipal government. The treasurer is responsible for maintaining the town’s financial accounts, investing town money, keeping accurate records of taxes voted, and paying the bills when properly submitted. An equally important role is the treasurer’s interaction with other town officials to ensure that municipal finances run smoothly. Ultimately, the town treasurer safeguards the finances and keeps the accounts for the town.

In short, the Treasurer is responsible for:

  • Maintaining all town financial records
  • Depositing and managing municipal funds
  • Processing accounts payable
  • Receiving and recording property tax payments
  • Coordinating with auditors
  • Providing financial reports to the Selectboard and voters

Additional details on tax rates, due dates, penalties, and other financial information are available on the Town’s Fast Facts page.
