Overview
The Townshend Cemetery Commission oversees the management, care, and preservation of all Town-owned cemeteries. Commissioners are elected to staggered five-year terms and are responsible for ensuring that Townshend’s cemeteries remain respectful, well-maintained public spaces in keeping with Vermont law and community expectations.
Meeting Schedule
Meets the second Monday of each month (except January and February) at 5:00 PM in the Townshend Town Hall.
Responsibilities of the Cemetery Commission
Maintenance & Upkeep
- Groundskeeping, mowing, and seasonal maintenance
- Tree and brush management
- Cleaning and care of cemetery infrastructure, including fencing and access points • Coordination of stone repairs and preservation work
Burial Records & Plot Administration
- Maintaining official cemetery records and maps
- Overseeing plot sales and transfers
- Ensuring accurate documentation of interments
- Coordinating with funeral homes, families, and monument companies
Cemetery Policies & Compliance
- Implementing and enforcing Town policies for cemetery use
- Adhering to Vermont statutes regarding public cemeteries
- Setting rules for decorations, monuments, and grave markers
- Overseeing winter rules and seasonal restrictions
Long-Term Planning
- Identifying needed improvements or expansions
- Coordinating restoration or historical preservation projects
- Managing budget needs for repairs, mowing, and infrastructure
- Working with Selectboard when funding or capital projects are required
Purchasing Cemetery Plots
Plot availability, pricing, and purchase procedures are handled through the Cemetery Commission Secretary & Agent, Charles Marchant.
Details may vary by cemetery, and the Commission can provide maps and guidance.
